Broad Bean and Bacon Loveliness ...

or Soup to us mere mortals.

Here is the recipe (my own) referred to in the post below.

About 2 lbs of shelled broad beans
large onion
clove of garlic
lardons or streaky bacon cut into small pieces
2 potatoes scrubbed well or peeled
2-3 litres of stock
olive oil
basil
salt and pepper to taste

Sweat bacon, onions and garlic in olive oil until bacon is golden brown and onions are translucent. Add broad beans, potatoes chopped roughly and stock. Bring to boil and then simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and add a handful of chopped/torn basil leaves and allow to infuse for five minutes. Blend in a liqidizer and reheat if necessary. Serve with crusty homemade bread.

This sounds gorge. Am buying stuff this weekend and eating lots of it. With interesting-sounding 'Syrian bread' recipe, as yet untried.

Recipe for Syrian bread please

Will post as soon as have tried it - may yet be revolting, but sounds lovely and includes interesting things such as pine nuts (gorgeous gorgeous) and mint. Yum.

Ah. Mint. Um, yuck. Concur with pine nuts but mint? Eugh.

I think the bread sounds interesting. I am rather un-nerved by the idea of broad beans in anything - I was badly frightened by one as a child - but I will keep this in mind as I am sure they will be appearing in the veg box before too long ...

Is summer ever going to come do you think? It's lovely and wet, but so COLD that nothing seems to be growing very much.

I don't like any veggies really unless they are raw or in soup but this was really lovely.

And thank-you but the dandelions I appear to be specializing in at the allotment are doing very well.
